Ok just had to reply here,
You're a little wide of the mark with the DOP job Belovedmonster.
A DOP is way more than just a technician who supports the directors vision, he is often an artist in his own right who is as responsible in many areas to the look and feel of the movie. EG: Darius Khonji DOP on Delicatessen, Alien 3, Seven (you seeing a link in style there?)
Also, you seem to be preoccupied with defining a Director's role (which you should not) as this often varies from Director to Director. eg: Some Directors are also DOP's (Rodriguez), some Director's often work 'in-camera' (Ridley Scott) others are more concerned with Actors (Robert Altman) and leave the camera stuff to the DOP and camera dept. Afterall isn't filmaking a colaborative effort of many Artists?
Also, the argument with Michael Bay and set pieces is also slightly redundant as much of the stunt work you see on screen is often filmed by the 2nd Unit.
So rather than getting caught up in the symantics of who does what as opposed to great Directors (and to clarify the Director is the person responsible for bringing ALL the elements of a film together, kind of like a conductor in an Orchestra, to what level he focuses on individual areas of a production is down to the individual nuances of the Director)why not concentrate on just simply - who are your fave Directors?
Mine for the record are Spielberg, Scorsese (how has he not been mentioned before in this post - is this the Academy running this forum????),Peter Jackson (also for his pre LOTR work), Robert Rodriguez, Sam Raimi, Peter Wier and David Fincher
Cheers,
Haxmin

Ed Zwick is another director I really respect. "Glory" is still one of the best war movies ever made...and "The Last Samurai" looks like a great film!
"Legends of the Fall" was okay. I have it on DVD for DP John Toll's commentary track (Braveheart, Thin Red Line). Some great info there for DP'S!
Later,
Paul

kubrick and hitchcock = gods.
darren arnonofsky (pi, requiem for a dream) i know his name is spelled wrong, but he is very talented.
wes anderson = genius. enough said. his films are perfect.
martin scorsese
i really dug danny boyle (what happened to him? you english bastards should know )
i think kevin smith is highly overrated...his dialouge is very unrealistic sounding, and very annoying. chasing amy was a great movie...in my opinion it was about an idiot man-child who has had no experience with women (probably much like kevin smith). clerks = alright. mallrats = liked it in 8th grade when it came out, just a real goofy stupid b movie comedy. dogma = ok....chris rock is seriously played out. j&sbsb = funny when I was stoned, sober, thought it was dumb. and once again chris rock is played out. main beef with kevin smith is that he comes off with this giant ego, and i hate that.
john carpenter -- i have to agree with you despin, he has definitely had his moments (dark star (movie sucked--low budget, shows talent) , halloween)...don't like his new **** though (JC's vampires, ghost of mars)
peter jackson = great slapstick. meet the feebles is a giant piece of **** though.
wachoski bros = revolutionary. those guys are great. i could go on for hours about the spirtuality of the matrix but i won't.
spike lee = do the right thing. great.
tarantino = great. we all know this.
rodriguez = creative as **** .
altman = the player is my fave of his.
p.t.anderson= no actual style, he just seems to copy other directors (h8 = mamet, bn = scorsese, m= altman) havent seen punch drunk love but i really want to. he is an excellent writer though, and he seems to work well with his actors--like marky mark in boogie nights. boogie nights is one **** fine film.
linklater - great wth actors. captures the mood of nothing like no other.
thats enough for now.
peace
